Polaroid photography was founded in 1937 by Edwin Land an icon of innovation and engineering. Yet at the turn of the century, his company faced new realities with the swift rise in digital photography. They ceased production of instant film in 2008. But that was short-lived; a dedicated group of Polaroid fans would save the last Polaroid factory in the world under the name ‘The Impossible Project,’ paving way for the eventual rebirth of the original ‘Polaroid’ brand in the years following.
Today, Polaroid as a company designs tools for the craft of instant photography and encourages creators across the globe to capture the beauty of real life. With introductions like the ultimate easy-to-use instant camera the Polaroid Flip, the world’s smallest instant camera the Polaroid Go, and the world’s first instant camera with built-in manual controls the Polaroid I-2, the company that we have come to know and love for over 80 years is still there, but filled with modern innovation and tech.
Artists who have work in MoMA’s collection—such as Andy Warhol, Nancy Burson, Ansel Adams and Robert Frank—were drawn to the Polaroid medium because of its immediacy and uniqueness.
